Slurp the Soup!

When the evening is cold and chilly or when your body decides to slow down on its routine, then there is nothing more comforting than seeing a pot of  soup simmering on the stove top. Soup is a comfort food, but at the same time it is a versatile culinary star too. It is a meal in itself, a comforting snack or a starter to a larger meal. It can be nutritious, filling and packed with flavours!

Soup is something which invokes a warm and cozy feeling within. This is understandable in the winter, when everyone prefers hot and warm drinks and food. But, what about the sunny and sticky summer season? It’s not that soup is loved only during the winters, there is a huge demand for anything and everything cold during the super hot summers and that is when cold soups come to the scene. It is one of the most loved starter ideas for an open-air brunch or a luncheon session.

Whether it is hot or cold, soup is a bowl of convenience loved by both the healthy and sick because of its filling and easy to digest nature. Every culture around the world you see today have their own adapted versions of soup, which shows how widely this form of food is accepted by everyone.

While, hot soups come in classic varieties such as Minestrone soup, French onion soup and Sweet corn chicken soup, cold soups also have a few traditional regional varieties among which Gazpacho soup is a popular one. While hot soups have all the ingredients in it thoroughly cooked, cold soup is not necessarily always cooked. Mostly cold soups are combinations of raw ingredients with one or two ingredients being cooked and added to it. Cold soups could be either sweet or sour, unlike the hot ones which are always savoury.

Soups hold a major advantage in their process of cooking. When the ingredients are combined together in a pot and cooked together in boiling water it opens the food to new flavours, thus making soup rich in flavours. When making cold soups the purees of raw or boiled vegetables make the base of the soup along with milk or cream. It gives us the maximum benefit of consuming raw veggies without losing any of the vitamins in it.

If hot soup is comforting then cold soups are refreshing, because of the raw and fresh ingredients used in them.

Nowadays, soups are available in all possible forms. There are dehydrated soups available in the stores, to which you just need to add boiling water before serving. But nothing beats a bowl of fresh and homemade soup cooked with your choice of ingredients.
